A Village Stores selling local produce and offering traditional service!
Ian and Karen Upshall moved to The Village Stores from Oxfordshire in April 2011. Coming originally from Dorchester in Dorset, we decided several years ago to have a complete lifestyle change. Although leaving behind very different careers, we felt we had acquired a good range of relevant skills which we could use in running our own business. Whilst it has been very hard work running The Village Stores (which will no doubt continue!), we are very clear about what we believe makes a thriving, vibrant and sustainable rural business. We don't claim to know everything - but we are customers ourselves and we will always run The Village Stores with the customer's interests at heart.
When we were preparing to move to The Village Stores we defined a clear set of values based on access, quality, professionalism and respect. We also decided that we wanted to become supporters of rural business and the community in which we live. We do not try to emulate a supermarket and we do not try to compete with them. Instead, we do our best to offer something that supermarkets do not - excellent personal service, attention to detail, unique and wonderful local food and produce.
We are very fortunate to live in a fantastic part of the country too. We are surrounded by hills and the famous Somerset Levels and these areas produce fine foods - dairy, meat, vegetables, fruit, etc. It is no hardship for us to source and supply these wonderful products and it means that we can both support our suppliers and provide our customers with the best that Somerset and the West of England has to offer.
If you believe that everyone should have access to good, honest, fresh food served with a smile then please support us. We have no shareholders to satisfy, no FTSE rating or overpaid executives - just pride in our Village Stores and a determination to stay in business for the benefit of the community, near and far.
